Strengthening Cooperation and Knowledge Exchange: Swiss City Delegation Visits Nicosia Municipality
The Municipality of Nicosia had the honour of hosting a distinguished delegation from the Swiss cities of Winterthur and Zurich, as part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen international cooperation in urban development, planning, and innovation.The visit of the Swiss delegation is exemplary for spin-off benefits of the SIA International Involvement as a cooperation partner the Creaitve Europe ARCH-E project. It has been facilitated by the Chamber of Architects of Cyprus, ARCH-E-project partner.
The delegation included Mr. Martin Joos, Head of the Department of Public Works and Civil Engineer in the city of Winterthur, and Board Member of SIA International, (Swiss Society of Engineers and Architects (SIA) – International Section), as well as Ms. Olympia Georgoudaki, Architect and Urban Planner, Board Member of the Foreigners’ Advisory Board of the City of Zurich and also a Board Member of SIA International.
The Mayor of Nicosia Mr. Charalambos Prountzos warmly welcomed the guests, underlining the importance of inter-municipal collaboration and the exchange of expertise in designing and evolving modern cities.
Mr. Joos presented key urban development strategies implemented in Switzerland, focusing on the use of public space, water management, sustainable mobility, and waste management. His insights provided valuable inspiration for the Municipality’s ongoing efforts in these areas.
A productive dialogue followed, with the participation of senior officials from various municipal departments. Discussions centred on urban planning and architectural practices across European cities, as well as the challenges faced by Nicosia in areas such as waste management, urban mobility, and the sustainable development of public spaces.
Ms. Georgoudaki’s contributions added a significant dimension to the exchange, highlighting the spatial and social evolution of cities through urban and architectural design. Drawing on her experience in Zurich, her professional background in Switzerland, and her engagement in international networks, she emphasized the role of architecture as a tool for social inclusion, cultural diversity, and quality of life enhancement in contemporary urban environments.
The delegation also visited the Municipality’s Smart City Control Room, where they were introduced to the digital tools used to monitor and support city operations in real time.
This visit provided an excellent opportunity for mutual learning and knowledge transfer. The Municipality of Nicosia looks forward to further strengthening and expanding its collaboration with the cities of Winterthur, Zurich, and other Swiss municipalities. Particular interest was expressed in developing joint initiatives in the fields of sustainable mobility, waste management, smart urban technologies, innovation, and entrepreneurship.
